Sun Princess has stopped in Santorini for the first time during it’s inaugural season! Previously cancelled due to local cable car engineering works and then operational reasons, this is the first time passengers will get to experience Santorini and the port tendering process. They state that Princess has confirmed that the following features will be ready as detailed below:
- Dome shows will begin March 19.
- Arena shows will begin rolling out March 29.
- Park19 is open, minus the ropes course, which will be completed March 29, and RollGlider, which will be done April 27.
- Spellbound is being tested on this voyage; it should be operational by March 19.

Passengers boarding the second Sun Princess cruise have been informed that the ship will no longer be stopping at Santorini. Princess have been unable to finalise shoreside tendering operations so Santorini will be replaced by Chania, Crete and each passenger will receive $50 onboard credit.

Sanctuary Charges for Sun Princess
While we don’t have the full price breakdown, a lounger at The Sanctuary on Sun Princess can be rented for $99 per person per day and a Cabana can be rented for $499 per day. The rest of the fleet normally charge $40 per day for a lounger and $220 for a cabana.

Soft-serve ice cream and complimentary pizza update
It has been reported that complimentary soft-serve ice cream is now only available from The Promenade on deck 9 (until 6pm each day).. The ice cream at Coffee and Cones on deck 17 is considered part of the Plus/Premium package options and would otherwise be chargeable at $4.
Complimentary pizza slices are available from both The Promenade on deck 9 (til 6pm) and Lido Slice on deck 17 (until 9pm).

New Elevator Designs

It’s 2:40 EST and 18:40 in Italy – Sun Princess started leaving the shipyard to head to Civitavecchia via Zelenika in Montenegro. She was supposed to depart between 4 and 5pm local time, according to this article but strong winds delayed her for a few hours.

Umai Teppanyaki and Hot Pot now Experiential Dining
Two of the new dining experiences on Sun Princess – Umai Teppanyaki and Hot Pot – have been re-categorised as Experiential Dining on the Princess App.
Their prices remain the same – $49 per person – but it does mean they cannot be selected as complimentary speciality meals as part of the Princess Premier Package, for example.
As well as a wide range of complimentary dining, Sun Princess will also offer the following:

Il Piccolo, the local newspaper in Trieste, has this headline but you need a login to read it…looks promising though!
An unofficial source via the shipyard has said that Sun Princess is due to leave the shipyard on Tuesday 13th February and will head to Civitavecchia, with work to complete during the journey.

Princess and Fincantieri prepare to deliver Sun Princess
It has been reported that Fincantieri and Princess now hope to deliver Sun Princess, the largest cruise ship built in Italy, on February 9. The ship’s new maiden voyage, a 10-day cruise departing Civitavecchia on February 18, will visit ports in Italy, Greece, and Turkey.

Travel agent preview cruise from Fort Lauderdale in October
This travel agent promotion confirms that there will be a 3 night cruise on Sun Princess for travel agents only departing from Fort Lauderdale on 11th October, going to Princess Cays.
This helps address the speculation about what Sun Princess will be doing between her arrival in Fort Lauderdale on 9th October from a Transatlantic cruise and her departure on the first 5 night Caribbean passenger cruise on 14th October.

Cirque Eloize team will join the ship from February 10
In this le journal de montreal article, it mentions that 30 members of the Cirque Eloize team will board Sun Princess on the weekend of 10th February to begin six to eight weeks of integration. This means they won’t be performing their productions for the first few cruises.

Our dedicated teams have been working tirelessly in collaboration with our shipyard partners at Fincantieri to ensure the completion of the revolutionary Sun Princess®. However, despite everyone’s best efforts, Fincantieri and Princess have mutually agreed to delay delivery of the ship, which unfortunately requires us to cancel the inaugural cruise scheduled for February 8.
We understand that this news is disappointing, and we share in your disappointment. We recognize the anticipation that surrounded this sailing, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this cancellation causes.
You will receive a full refund of the cruise fare along with any additional onboard services that were pre-purchased, as well as a 50% future cruise credit (FCC) that can be used on a future Princess® voyage. Dining Reservations have opened up for Sun Princess
Dining Reservations have finally opened up for the inaugural
The Catch by Rudi and Butchers Block are pop-up specialty dining experiences on Sun Princess chargeable at $39pp and $49pp respectively. What is surprising is the inclusion of Kai Sushi which has previously been bundled under Casual Dining but is now charged at $39 pp. And the exclusion of Umai Teppanyaki. Love by Britto has not re-appeared for booking.

Itinerary change for first two cruises on Sun Princess
Princess have notified passengers on the first two cruises – departing on Feb 8th and Feb 18th – that the port of Santorini has been replaced by Heraklion in Crete. This is due to the Santorini Cable Car being out of service for maintenance – we knew about this work months ago as it was published on the Santorini Cable Car website so it clearly took a while to filter through at Princess HQ! This is a shame, particularly as some of the Sun Princess design was inspired by Santorini, but Heraklion is a good substitute.

There are reports from the Sky Princess that a number of crew are being transferred out mid-contract to join Sun Princess and are being flown out to Europe now.

Princess launches new app
Princess Cruises has rolled out a new app, featuring a new interface with quicker access to features, fonts that are easier to read and “enhanced personalisation.” Princess also said the new app uses less memory and consumes less power than the previous one.
The new app retains base features from the original app, including OceanReady streamlined boarding, dining reservations, guest services chat and the line’s OceanNow service on demand. The app will also keep the guest-to-guest wayfinding and navigation tools. All activity from the original app will transfer to the new app. Guests currently using the original app will continue to be able to do so if they prefer.
The new app is available in the Apple App Store and Android Play store.
For the Sun Princess inaugural, we were prompted to download the new app from the Android Play store and we are all set. Currently you can only access all your bookings by logging in by their individual booking numbers. Dining reservations are still not available for the inaugural and there is no ship or event information as yet.

There were still quite a few staterooms available so maybe they want to ease the new crew in gradually. It’s also noted that the April cruises have been set to sold out too.

“Around the perimeter, are LED ribbons,” Parker said. “And wrapped around these columns and around the back are also LED strips. So, if someone hits the jackpot, this place will come alive.” When asked about smoking in the casino, Parker said: “it will be smoking and non-smoking. One new innovation we have on this ship is 100 percent fresh-air replenishment in this casino. So that is a separate system that’s been installed in here to continuously replace this space with fresh air.”
Though seemingly a pedestrian topic, Sun Princess’ elevators will be “smart. “When you walk up to an elevator, you hit the deck you want to go to, and it tells you which elevator to get in,” said Parker. Sun Princess’ three elevator bank—located at the ship’s fore, mid and aft—offer guests six or eight cars each. The elevator bank’s computer will calculate the number of floor-stops per car and identify the quickest ride for guests to reach their destination. “We have 4,300 guests, potentially 1,000 uppers, but we wanted the ship still to feel small and intimate,” said Parker. “You’ll see by the way we’ve organized the lobbies and the elevators. It should be very easy for our guests to get around the ship.

Love by Britto will feature a seven-course, fixed price menu ($149 per person) beginning with a flute of Champagne upon arrival and features luxury ingredients including lobster, caviar and truffles, and dessert options that always include chocolate fondue.
Specifically featured across the seven-course meal are dishes highlighted by delectable and intoxicating aphrodisiacs, like Oysters with Champagne Pearls or Grilled Fig with Prosciutto and Roquefort as featured starters, followed by savoury soups like Asparagus and Watermelon Cocktail with Vodka.
Also on the menu are savoury salad options that feature quail eggs, pomegranate and avocado. Fish dishes like Lobster Thermidor with Clams and Wild Rice, and Honey-Basted Wild Salmon. Meats like Wagyu Chateaubriand Rossini and Roast Quail Farci with Truffles. Champagne flavored sorbet with Rose Petals to cleanse the palate. And heavenly dessert options in addition to chocolate fondue that range from Iced Soufflé Tahiti Vanilla and White Valrhona Chocolate with Hot Raspberries, to Hot Chocolate Soufflé with Hot Bing Cherries.

It looks as though Princess Cruises will be hosting an inaugural media event onboard Sun Princess prior to her official inaugural cruise. An entertainer has revealed on social media that he is booked to perform on Sun Princess when she is docked in Barcelona from 6th to February 2024. She will then depart on her inaugural cruise on 8th February.

The largest casino ever built by Princess Cruises will have an astounding 50% more space and 30% more machines than the line’s Royal Class ships on its newest ship, Sun Princess.
Located on deck 8 adjacent to the bustling Piazza, the Princess Casino offers high ceilings and a spacious floorplan for world-class gaming comfort and entertainment. Sun Princess completes initial Sea Trials and final Dry Dock
Sun Princess has completed her first sea trials, setting out from Monfalcone on October 28th and arriving in Palermo on October 31st where she completed her final dry dock.
Before being refloated, Sun Princess the new Princess slogan “I love this” was painted on the ship’s hull. She left Palermo on 8th November, completed more sea trials and arrived back in Monfalcone on 11th November. She was passed by Enchanted Princess on November 9th just south of Italy:

The highly experienced team, with a collective 150-plus years of service, that will guide Sun Princess through the remainder of her construction phase and bring her out for the anticipated inaugural season include Captains Craig Street and Paolo Arrigo; Staff Captains Brian Whelan and Valerio Esposito; Hotel General Managers Ralph D’Souza and Simona Stumberger; and Chief Engineers Gaetano Guida and Davor Pavlovic-Kalifo.
“Sun Princess promises something special for everyone and we’re pleased to announce the skilled and deserving team, led by Captains Street and Arrigo, who will guide Sun Princess through the remainder of the construction phase and ready her for her shining debut in just one year,” Padgett added.

Captain Craig Street
Captain Craig Street joined Princess as a deck cadet in 1990, following his time at the Warsash Maritime Academy in the south of England that also included training aboard cruise ships. Appointed third officer in 1993, Street worked his way up through the ranks, taking command of Star Princess in 2008, and has since served as captain of 13 Princess ships. Street developed an appreciation for travel at an early age as he spent much of his youth living with his family overseas in various countries including Nigeria, Singapore, Dubai, Tanzania and Saudi Arabia. He was educated at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh, Scotland, before joining the Princess family. With a keen interest in flying, he also holds a private helicopter license and when time permits, enjoys playing golf in the amazing ports Princess visits. His favourite ports are those in French Polynesia and Hawaii.
Captain Paolo Arrigo
An accomplished mariner whose career spans more than a quarter century at sea, Captain Paolo Arrigo joined Princess Cruises as a deck cadet in 1996 after serving for a year in the Italian Coast Guard. After moving up through the ranks, serving as first officer, safety officer and staff captain, Arrigo was named captain at Princess Cruises in 2017. In addition to his role as captain, Arrigo has worked for Princess’ shoreside headquarters on a variety of high-profile projects, including the managing elements of the development and launch of the MedallionClass Experience. His extensive maritime experience and easy rapport with guests and crew made him a natural choice to serve as captain of the reality-based television program, The Real Love Boat, which recently completed its first season and attracted millions of new viewers to the brand.
Staff Captain Brian Whelan: A native of Galway City in Ireland, Brian Whelan began his maritime career 23 years ago with Princess Cruises, and over the years has steadily moved up the ranks to his current position of staff captain. A graduate of the Glasgow College of Nautical Studies, Whelan holds a Master Mariners’ Certificate and has been named one of 20 leaders under 40 by Seatrade Cruise News, a prestigious cruise industry publication. When he’s not onboard ship, Whelan enjoys traveling with his family and lists the Mediterranean as his favorite place to cruise.
Staff Captain Valerio Esposito: A native of Meta di Sorrento near Naples, Italy, Valerio Esposito’s career spans more than two decades, including the past 17 with Princess Cruises. He started as deck cadet on Golden Princess in 2006, and quickly progressed through the ranks up to his promotion to staff captain in 2018, becoming one of the youngest in the company to earn that position. Over the years he has commanded virtually every ship in the fleet, including Star Princess, Dawn Princess, Coral Princess, Emerald Princess, Crown Princess, Ruby Princess, Caribbean Princess, Island Princess, Diamond Princess and for P&O Australia – Pacific Pearl and Pacific Eden. He is currently staff captain of Majestic Princess. Esposito completed his studies in the South of Italy at Nautical Institute Nino Bixio, nearby his hometown, and holds a Master Mariners Captain License.
Hotel General Manager Ralph D’Souza: D’Souza joined Princess in 2006 as a junior purser and worked his way through the ranks and achieved his goal of becoming hotel general manager in 2019. The highlight of D’Souza’s career was being chosen to be part of the inaugural team for the new Royal Class series of ships. During his seagoing career, D’Souza has been part of the launch team for Royal Princess, Regal Princess and Majestic Princess. In 2017, he was selected to be part of the deployment team of the MedallionClass Experience, where he was an ambassador of this new and innovative way to cruise with Princess. D’Souza holds a degree in EMBA and a Ph.D. in business administration. When he is not sailing the sea, he enjoys spending time at his seacoast home where he soaks up the abundance of nature around his home by gardening and keeping fit.
Hotel General Manager Simona Stumberger: A native of Slovenia, where she studied language and hospitality management, Stumberger began her career at sea in the bar department and further diversified her hotel experiences by working in the guest services department and hand in hand with the hotel and food & beverage division. She is now proudly a hotel general manager, where she shares her passion for travel and impeccable service with each guest. When on vacation, she loves spending time with family and friends, hiking the beautiful mountains in the Alps and looking after her orchids, which are her passion.
Chief Engineer Gaetano Guida: Gaetano Guida joined Princess Cruises in 2002 and was named chief engineer aboard Royal Princess in 2017. After earning his nautical degree in July 1999 from Nautical Institute Nino Bixio in Piano di Sorrento, Italy, Guida joined the Italian Navy serving on the “M/V Vesuvio,” a refueling ship for other naval ships. He met his wife onboard Star Princess in 2015, and together they have two sons. His hobbies include reading, particularly, leadership and psychology books, and listening to music.
Chief Engineer Davor Pavlovic-Kalifo: Davor Pavlovic-Kalifo joined Princess Cruises in 2002, as second engineer and was named chief engineer aboard Sapphire Princess in 2014. A native of Croatia, Pavlovic-Kalifo worked as an engine cadet onboard a cargo ship and then went on to college, graduating as a marine engineer. His first assignment on a cruise ship was Tahitian Princess, where he met his wife. They are proud parents to a 3-year-old boy, and they love spending time as a family in Dubrovnik. When not traveling the world, Pavlovic-Kalifo enjoys deep sea fishing and exploring the Adriatic islands via his motorboat.
